Château Fombrauge is a Grand Cru Classé produced in the appellation of Saint-EmilionGrand Cru. This red wine comes from a vineyard with a total areaof 58 hectares. The average vines are 36 years old, and are planted inclay and limestone soils and Molasses de Fronsadais. The wine is aged for 18months, 45% in new barrels, 45% in barrels used for one vintage and 10% in thelatest generation of concrete vats. The blend of the 2016 vintage is composedof 93% Merlot and 7% CabernetFranc.
The winter was mild and humid, andbudburst occurred a week early. The beginning of spring was cool and humid, with plenty of rain in April, which slowed the development of the vines. Frosts- though fortunately very rare - were caused by sharp drops in temperature inlate April and early May. After a short break on the 25th of May with warm days leading to the appearance ofthe first flowers, the blooming occurred rather late in fairly cool and humidclimatic conditions. From June 24th toSeptember 12th, the summer was hot andcharacterized by drought. The clay-limestone soil reacted admirably to theseconditions. The grapes began to appear on August 4th andthe mid-veraison took place between the 10th and15th of August. The harvest tookplace between September 30th and October 22nd.
With a magnificent dark redcolour and shades of purple, the Château Fombrauge 2016 unrolls red fruits aromasand ripe tannins on the palate. The wine displays a balancedprofile and offers fantastic length.
